Dying Days

As the sludge defrosts and disappears, the dark cells are left behind on the crater floor. 

As you can see below, only a large stain remains where a once active sludge pool contained thousands of dark micro cells. 

Different Species

All previous images of these micro cells have appeared relatively flat. If these micro cells are related to the macro cells, then perhaps the image below is yet another variant of these strange phenomena.  The unique image below indeed supports the idea that the cellular objects are more than just chemical dust stains. 

Under favourable conditions, it appears that these cells can retain their structure as the icy sludge melts.  In this case, instead of dissolving away into the ground like previous images have shown, they have instead survived and formed a border around the icy sludge that harbours them. 

One theory circulating around the Internet is that organisms in this dark material thrive during the months after winter and come to the surface as the temperatures rise. Once the ice has melted, they disappear back into the ground and lie dormant until the favourable seasons return. 

If these are living organisms from under the ground, it appears that once they reach the surface, they can travel and flourish anywhere. The context image below highlights the base of an ice-covered mountainside. 

Hundreds of metres above the ground on an almost vertical cliff face, small cells of dark material can be found growing.  

These are unquestionably the same micro cells seen growing on the icy sludge in previous images. 

Its Alive!

Movement of micro cells can be seen in an enhanced version of image M0800063.  Whether or not this is caused by wind forces is difficult to determine.  However, the movement does appear to be in a circular motion around the sludge and not in a simple straight wind blown direction.  In addition, these micro cells are located within a very deep crater that could be acting as an effective windshield.  Are these cells actually alive and moving on their own accord? 

It appears that the properties of the icy sludge may have been modified by the presence of these micro cells.  Instead of the ice melting away in a linear regular fashion, this sludge has a very strange sublimation shape. Have biological waste products from the cells affected the composition of the ice causing irregular sublimation rates? 

The extraordinary nature of these micro cells even baffled MSSS.  While stating their simple explanation of these cells as fact in one sentence, they also point out a puzzling fact that seems to contradict their belief that these are non-biological objects.
