Cutting it close

And most recently an impact was recorded in Jordan as reported by Yahoo news. This was the closest so far to taking casualties upon impacting very near a village.

Meteorite crashes near mourning Jordanian village

AMMAN  – “Residents of a Jordanian village attending a funeral got an unwelcome surprise when a fiery meteorite crashed down in their midst, one of them told AFP Monday.”

"More than 100 of us were gathered Wednesday at sundown to bury a village resident when we saw a strange object that looked like a ball of fire," said Mohammed Nawaf Mikdadi, mayor of Beit Eidess, some 85 kilometers (50 miles) north of Amman.

"The meteor shot through the sky from west to east before a part of it came down a half kilometer (quarter mile) from the village, sparking an explosion and then a fire with four-meter (12-foot) flames for 10 meters (100 feet) straight," Mikdadi told AFP.

"The villagers thought it was a missile, but when we went to the spot there weren't any metal scraps," he said.

The mayor expressed relief the meteorite fell on a rocky area near Beit Eidess and not in a nearby forest, which could have spelled disaster for the village.

The increasing interest by governments

Since a few months the interest in NEO ’s / asteroids / meteorites is more and more being voiced openly by ever more powerful organizations. By now even national governments are expressing their interest in keeping track of these objects in a structured manner.

A good example of this is the British government, which acknowledged the threat coming at us through NEO ‘s and even dedicated a special web page to the results of the task force sent on this quest.

Much less open, but focusing on it nonetheless, is the US government. Awareness is growing in the US as well, that we are in a free-fire zone for impact from outer space. NASA is seriously putting effort in studying how to tackle an impactor heading for Earth before it hits.

In 1999, NASA added the Deep Impact mission to its Discovery Program.  On February 2001, they finalized their preliminary design, which calls for a unmanned probe that will shoot a half ton copper dart into Comet 9P/Tempel 1, in early 2004. 

The stated scientific aim of the Deep Impact probe (when boiled down to its essence) is to create a really big hole in the middle of the Comet 9P/Tempel 1, so that NASA scientists can see whatever is to be seen. “ 

The big picture we’re looking at

What can be concluded from all this? It seems the pieces of the puzzle dropped before us over the last two years seem to be finally falling into place. We may well have found our ‘King of Terror’, and a terror it is. Not just one stone threatening us, but a swarm of them, striking us blind for now as we just don’t seem to see them coming.

The conclusion seems fair that the concern by the UK/US and other governments is legitimate. An increase has been detected in meteor activity as well as Solar activity, beyond the ‘normal’ periodic activity. If we are currently flying into a cosmic mine field of debris, we probably haven’t seen the worst of it yet by far.

This threat may become even worse, and last for years to come as well. A grim picture, but nobody can tell right now. All we can do is wait and be on maximal alert for in-bounds, while trying to do what we can to deflect or destroy any hazardous ones.

We are right now like bowling pins in a cosmic bowling game. Let’s just pray nobody will throw a strike in this ‘game’. In this bowling game you’re out after just one strike, not three.
