Why The Government Really Fears
Public The Panic of a False Alam

The next time you receive a paycheck, take a close look at the pay stub. First, note the amount of the gross earnings and what the government takes out.  Then, look at the precious little you get to keep. Now, multiply this by every person in America who receives a paycheck and what you get is a financially dependent government.

If there were no income tax, the Federal government would make a handsome sum on all the shovels, concrete, trowels and so forth you’d buy in order to build your impact shelter with a Federal Sales Tax.  However, this is not the case with our present system of Federal taxation, which relies on income. 

Let’s assume that you knew that an impactor could hit the earth in 6 months. In this case, you stop working to build an impact shelter for your family and your paychecks stop coming.  The result is that the government would then take a heavy loss in two ways.   

• First is the obvious immediate impact of no paycheck, which is not a welcome thing for a government that reflexively views tax cuts with deep suspicion.
• The second is that you could very well slip into a lower tax bracket, which means an additional loss to the Federal government at the end of the tax year, assuming that the impactor flies harmlessly past the Earth.   

If enough American wage earners were to spend a month or more building an impact shelter for their family, that could mean a staggering loss for the Federal government, even if the prediction of an impact proved to be wrong.

So, is NASA enveloped in a huge conspiracy?  The question is a pointless distraction because NASA is a funded Federal agency and must do as it is told. 

If a potential impactor is found, the government (those who fund and control NASA) will want to keep the money machine working for as long as possible in order to achieve what it feels are its own goals.  No matter how noble those goals are, there is no valid reason for suppression of such critical information.

Where Does This Leave Astronomers? 

The government through agencies like NASA is moving quickly towards its instinctive need to operate in control mode, which also includes deciding who will live and who will die from an impact event.

Since 1998, astronomers have been led down a path between the gaping jaws of a controlling vice.  To the right is the controlling nature of governments and to the left is the self-serving irresponsibility of the media. 

In order for astronomers to continue their work, they have no choice but to pass though the center of this vice with the hope that they can master the art of public relations in time to prevent the opposing jaws of the vice from ratcheting inward, until the NEO reporting process is so badly throttled that is fails.  

In short, NASA is shoving this suppression of critical information down everyone’s throat and there is sweet all we can do about it.

Where Does This Leave The Rest of Us?

This debate leaves us common folk with two basic options.  The first is that we take action and as citizens demand that:

1. All sighting information is published freely and without any suppression whatsoever.
2. We recognize that astronomers need an organic reporting system that suits their needs, and not those of a public relations spinmeister.
3. Our government spends whatever is needed to build a planetary defense.
4. We put at least as much effort into teaching our children about impactors, as we do about the proper use of condoms.

However, this first option has one very terrible flaw.  None of us alive, have lived to see people die as the result of an impact event. 

Forget what history teaches us.  We never learn from history anyway.   But we will learn after we dig mass graves and bury our loved ones, and then the survivors will stand on every mountaintop and scream “never again” at the top of our their voices. 

What is the second option?  

We take a lesson from the now famous tree-huggers who chain themselves to old growth trees before the loggers can cut them down.  We chain ourselves to the necessary right of astronomers to freely communicate NEO sightings in an organic manner that is entirely free of the external pressures of suppression and public relations spin. 

Ah yes, but then who will hug the trees as it were?  Ask yourself these simple questions. 

• If a public protest were scheduled within 200 miles of your home during a workday, would you take a day off from work and join the protest at your own expense? 
• Would you stand in front of a NASA office holding a sign that says “SUPPRESSION IS BAD SCIENCE,” and let your voice be heard? 

If you are caught by surprise by the next impact event, remember these question along with your answers -- provided you’re lucky enough to survive it.
