Scientists poring over ‘infrasonic’ sound waves
Los Alamos National Laboratories physicist Mark Stanley said that, on closer inspection, “we’ve seen very strong ionization in sprites” indicating that there were enough air molecules ionized to cause heating and an accompanying pulse - a celestial thunderclap, as it were.
It is hard to know for sure if a sprite, noctilucent cloud or a similar phenomenon was actually responsible for the Columbia tragedy. Our knowledge in this department is so underdeveloped that physicists jokingly refer to the area of atmosphere where they occur as the “ignorosphere”.
Even if the shuttle did not fly through a sprite or noctilucent cloud, the intense reactions between the shuttle and atmosphere may have potentially created its own sprite. The Journal of Geophysical Research has published a similar scenario.

Scientists have observed interaction between a blue jet and a meteor. And in December 1999, Los Alamos National Laboratories researcher David Suszcynsky and colleagues, including Lyons, published an account of a meteor that apparently triggered a sprite.
Whether the cause was a natural sprite, self-induced reaction or a noctilucent cloud, a significant contributor to the electrical theory is solar activity.
According to SpaceWeather.com, a modest and ongoing geomagnetic storm was affecting the Earth on February 1st, just as the shuttle was trying to land. While not particularly strong, YOWUSA could not find any record of a shuttle landing during such elevated solar activity.

NASA: Probably not the Insulation
There was a coronal mass ejection from the sun reaching the
earth during the period that the shuttle was re-entering the atmosphere. This CME was not in itself unusual, but it could have charged the shuttle’s tiles with
an electrical charge. If sufficiently high, this charge would have caused a potentially damaging discharge as the shuttle touched the upper atmosphere.
According to a paper presented in IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science (vol. NS-30, Dec. 1983, p. 4296-4301), the glass coating of the tiles creates discharge pulses under irradiation conditions. Normally, these pulses would dissipate gradually over time. But the charged condition of the upper atmosphere at that time could have changed the picture.
An electrostatic event of sufficient power could have damaged the tiles enough to result in a chain-reaction peeling back along the leading edge of the left wing, which is apparently the event that initiated the break-up of the orbiter.
Within days of the disaster, YOWUSA and a limited number of other attentive web sites had managed to piece together the links between the initial anomalous photographs from San Francisco, the newly discovered electrical phenomena from onboard the shuttle itself, the previous concerns raised about such phenomena, the lack of understanding in this field, and the added effect of increased solar activity during shuttle re-entry.
Just as we finished putting these pieces together, new information emerged that made us question the integrity of the NASA investigation.
The new information came from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) monitors that are capable of recording sounds with a frequency below 20 Hz in the inaudible infrasound range.

Earth monitors recorded explosions on Columbia
According to a report in the Toledo Blade, some scientists believe the recordings could shed light on the theory that an electrical phenomenon called a “blue jet” knocked the shuttle out of the sky.
Bedard has used infrasound sensor arrays stationed in Colorado to listen for mysterious electrical discharge events in the upper atmosphere.
If the NOAA would release more information on these recordings such as the timings of each event, the public might better understand the real situation and validity of this theory. However, the administration has been silenced and we fear that this is indicative of a suspicious investigation.
While every other possible theory is being openly discussed and reported by the major print and television media with expert opinions, diagrams, transcripts and factual details, the electrical theory is being squashed under a cone of silence seemingly enforced by a persuasive NASA administration.
In a recent CNN article titled “Shuttle foam back on table, under scope”, they reported on the fact that the “independent” investigators were reopening the cases for all theories in their investigations. CNN summarized every reported theory consisting of foam, ice or fuel tank shrapnel striking the wing, the age of the shuttle, space debris, and even terrorism in the form of sabotage. Nowhere in this article from a major news agency did they mention the possibility of an unknown electrical phenomenon, in which even NASA representatives have occasionally indicated keen interest. Why?
The recent CNN article was a continuation of a seemingly rampant suppression of this possibility. Our initial suspicions arose when the San Francisco photographer insisted on remaining anonymous and refused to release the photographs to the public until NASA could study them.

NASA probes ‘electric zap’ mystery photo
The photographer continues to request his name be withheld, adding he would not release the image publicly until NASA has a chance to study it.
While this request alone does not justify suspicion, it is indicative of a trend of suppression among the media and agencies involved that hold the necessary data; a trend that seems to continue with the NOAA.

“We have detected sounds from shuttle re-entries in the past,” Dr. Alfred Bedard Jr. of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said when asked about the content of infrasound recordings from Columbia. “But we’ve been asked not to discuss the results publicly, and we will honor that request.”
If those that have the data are seemingly being silenced by NASA, it is not surprising that there is no data coming out of NASA regarding this theory either. NASA has released the black and white military photo showing a potentially damaged wing, several video clips of falling debris during the launch and break-up events, transcripts of communications, timeline summaries of events, but nothing on the electrical phenomena in question.
The data captured from the MEIDEX shuttle experiment could also prove to be a huge step in understanding what happened to the shuttle. The excitement of astronaut Dr. Yoav Yair regarding this unprecedented discovery of a potentially new electrical phenomenon has been significantly downplayed on the official website.

Flight Status
The MEIDEX team has confirmed they have obtained an image of one ELVE and one image containing two Sprites. Several other candidates are being evaluated.
Since this last understated update, no more information was posted about the MEIDEX experiment. Why?
Given that the remarkable images were taken well over a week before the disaster, one would expect that they would have the data available by now, or at least something to show the public, but all we have are useless gray cloudy samples from a bad first day of use.

Update: Researchers Assess the Status of STS-107 Scientific Data
“For those experiments that received down-linked
data during the mission, we estimate that anywhere between 50-90 percent of the data was acquired,” said David Liskowsky, STS-107 Program Scientist for NASA’s Office of Biological and Physical Research.
Surely, the highly anticipated MEIDEX data in question makes up part of this 50-90 percent. If so, why aren’t these images pertinent to the electrical theory being released along with all the other data being used to support other theories?
As we were researching this theory, a YOWUSA source warned us that NASA was becoming particularly sensitive about what was being published about the Columbia disaster. Given the lack of information being released regarding the electrical theory, perhaps it is this possibility that disturbs NASA the most. No matter how sensitive they are about this theory, the public needs to see the evidence for themselves before it can be dismissed.
The investigation board is planning to hold its first public hearing where non-NASA experts can voice their theories on the Columbia tragedy. The exact details are currently unclear by will possibly be on February 27 in the Houston area.

Board: Columbia began shedding pieces over California
“We will invite experts who are not associated with any U.S. government program who have theories or hypothesis, who have written to us or provided research documents, to express to us their opinions,” said board chairman Harold Gehman Jr., a retired Navy admiral. “That way we get input... not by any government agency.”
Whether or not the electrical theory will be discussed is yet to be seen. How can an honest and open public hearing be conducted if NASA gets to filter the content being discussed?
As we have shown, there are significant volumes of evidence that warrant proper open debate about the electrical theory before NASA declares it irrelevant. The San Francisco photos, shuttle research, infrasound recordings, solar flare activity, and previously raised concerns about electrical phenomenon both known and unknown must all be addressed by NASA before the final cause is determined. If it is not, we cannot trust their determination, and we may not know until 2006 when NASA finally does the necessary research to understand the real danger to the shuttle from the ignorosphere.
