Tracking Planet X Fast MoversYowusa.com, 24-June-2011
When they do, they can cause massive solar storms, which if aimed at the Earth, could be devastating. The term “fast movers” is often used to describe these objects and how they can effect the Earth is not a hit-or-miss proposition. This is because the behavior of the Sun is usually the same, whether the fast movers are sun-grazers (passing close by the sun) or sun-impactors. As these fast movers approach the Sun they can trigger a solar flare which is often followed by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The X-Ray Flux of Solar FlaresThe first part of a CME is the X-Ray flux, which travels at the speed of light. This means, it strikes the Earth (assuming we're in the cross-hairs of the event) in approximately eight minutes, thereby eliminating any chance of warning. Though there is no warning for the X-Ray flux, our magnetosphere and upper atmosphere should adequately protect us from even severe storms. If not, the X-Ray part of the CME poses a threat to biological life – like any overdose of X-Ray radiation. It is also important to remember that most solar storms are comprised of two components, the X-Ray flux which travels at the speed of light and the ionized gas of a CME which travels much slower – but can be far more deadly. For example, an E.L.E. (extinction level event) catastrophic CME is shown near the end of the movie Knowing (2009), staring Nicolas Cage. The Radiation Flux of a CMEA CME is an eruption from the surface of the Sun consisting typically of millions of tons of highly charged plasma and may or may not follow a solar flare. It is measured as “radiation flux.” Radiation flux is designated by classes: A, B, C, M, X and Y where A Class is the lowest power level and Y Class is the highest. The Until the last solar maximum the highest designated level was X – that is until an X 24 event occurred in 2003, thereby necessitating a new, catastrophic classification designated Y Class. This was necessary because the classes are divided into logarithmic scale, which means that a M8.0 has ten times the power of a C8.0. Therefore the 2003 X24 event was re-classified as an Y2.4 event. Unlike a solar flare that can strike the Earth at the speed of light, the ejected mass of a CME from the Sun travels at about one million miles per hour. If Earth is in the cross hairs of a moderate event, it can reach us Earth about ninety-three hours or less. With a Y-class event, that same pummeling can reach the Earth in less than twenty hours. Upon impact with the magnetosphere it deforms the magnetic flux lines of our protective shell and, if strong enough, penetrates it. The result could be an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) that potentially creates enormous induced voltages in power transmission lines and all electric and electronic circuits. A complete failure of the power grid and all circuits is thinkable. If that were to happen we would be transported back several hundred years because all technology would cease to function within seconds of the arrival of the CME. As a backup to the SOHO screen saver, there is another service provided by the Australian government for broadcast and communication providers. It is a free CME monitoring service that notifies subscribers of flares and/or CMEs above C8. The threshold is C8 and above as these radiation levels can potentially interfere with radio and communication transmissions. For optimal viewing, start by setting the delay to five minutes and adjust according to your preferences. When studying these images, it is important to note they are taken at extremely different exposure times which, if not taken into account will distort the apparent velocity of fast movers. The approximate exposure times are:
If the track of an object appears almost twice as long in the green image than in the blue image, it is not because it has doubled its velocity, but simply because it was tracked by the CCD (SOHO camera) almost twice as long. Spotting the Fast MoversDistinguishing between fast movers and other streaks in SOHO image requires acute discernment as not all streaks in the images are actual depictions of solid bodies of one kind or another.
Even the most intense meteor shower could not be expected to leave signatures like that. Sometimes there are just a few traces apparently going in approximately the same direction but of different length (in the same image) – no fast movers there either – they would leave traces of about the same length. Comets are easy to distinguish because of their halo and tail – there is no chance to mistake one for anything else. SOHO does not always catch a CME in pictures – especially if the satellite cameras are in “bake out” mode. From time to time this is done to restore the CCDs to good working order. If you are in the dark and NASA is giving you old images until the cameras are back on line you need another source for CME information. The service by the Australian government is that source. As
Planet X approaches the core of our solar system, it will be preceded
and followed by a large host of asteroids and comets in the core of
our solar system that impact or flyby close to the Sun. 
Sometimes,
especially after a strong flare or CME, electronic particles leave
their signature on the images. Usually they can be discounted because
they go in every which direction and leave traces of varying length.
