Health Care Reform and 2012 — Where's the Beef?

Now that the health care reform bill has been enacted into law, President Obama's next job is to answer one simple question.  Where's the beef? 

After a year of feckless Democratic cat herding and insidious Republican hate mongering, all Obama can say for now is, "this isn't radical reform, but it is major reform."  So what will this major reform look like?

Between now and 2014, over 2 million American families will continue to find major reform in the bankruptcy courts.  

Meanwhile, we can only wonder how many Americans will die from preventable deaths between now and 2018, when the preventative health requirement finally kicks in?  (Good golly, do we even want to imagine a number?)

On top of this, Republican state attorneys are banking on killing the legislation via the Supreme Court despite the pundits who assure us that this is a ridiculous non-starter. 

However, keep in mind that in 1933, the Supreme Court gutted the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA). A major piece of jobs legislation passed by the congress during the depths of the Great Depression. This does raise the prospect that lightening could strike twice.  Consider the following:

• Domestically, this is the same court that decided an election, gave corporations the right to patent life and gave developers the right to confiscate homes and small businesses for new parking lots. 
  
  
• Internationally, this is the same court that just exported our electoral process to foreign corporate board rooms.  This does not mean that foreign interests need to convince us of anything.  They only need to confuse, co-opt and compromise enough of our politicians to get whatever they want.

The history of this court is that  the wants of the global elites, outweigh the needs of the common American.  So yes, legal reasoning be damned, lightening could very well strike twice, with another 5 to 4 pro-elite ruling.  

Perhaps the time has come for a constitutional amendment that forces the Supreme Court to rule with a super majority when it legislates from the bench.

So how does this Washington version of a Greek tragedy, fit with 2012 and coming catastrophic Earth changes?  Forget the talking points on both sides.  The parade is over folks.  It's a stall.     

B.Y.O.S. (Bring Your Own Shovel)

As Democrats and Republicans scurry home with party talking points in hand, this debris of this legislative parade takes me back to when I was a college student in Arizona.

Larry, a good friend and blind from birth, decided that he wanted to go to a big parade in Phoenix, so we went.  He had a grand time, smelling the cotton candy and hearing the cheers of the crowd and all of the other delights. 

As they all marched past by I described the beautiful cowgirls and handsome cowboys, mounted upon their magnificent horses.  Then were also antics of the rodeo clowns, trumpeting high school bands and so forth.  As time went by, Larry poked me in the side and said "it's time to leave, before we get caught in traffic."

"What you mean leave," I answered. "I can still see two more high school bands coming down the road."

Larry smiled and nodded. "I hear them coming too, but I also hear the snow shovels."

"Snow shovels!" It was 85° on a clear and sunny day in Phoenix. Besides, in Phoenix you never saw snow unless you bought a flavored snow cone at neighborhood convenience store.  "OK Larry, where do you get this absurd idea of snow shovels?"

He replied with a cocky grin, "the city workers at the back of the parade use them to scoop up the horse poop. I hear them scrapping along on the asphalt."  

Whoulda thunk it?  I was stumped.  Larry could hear further than I could see.  Nonetheless he had a point, so we skedaddled out of there.  He was right and we were enjoying our tasty milk shakes and cheeseburgers at the local Bob's Big Boy, as most folks were jockeying to get out the parking lots.

Now, let's fast-forward to the present. When a snow shovel is grating along the asphalt, it has a unique sound, which varies. Especially when it ploughs  under a big steamy pile of fresh poop. 

As our congressmen and senators begin to regale us with their party line talking points in the weeks and months to come, we're going to know exactly what they're slinging ─ poop. Be it Democratic or Republican poop, poop is poop.

Yup, the parade is over and health care reform is still as obtuse as the toxic derivatives concocted on Wall Street. However there is one number that really matters. 2014. Until that point, it's all pretty much exploitation as usual.  At least the kids catch a decent break.  

However, you consider two other important dates, the health care charade begins to make sense.  Chilling sense.  So then what's the real point here? In a word, timing.

Timing is Everything

President Obama plans to remove the remaining troops from Iraq and Afghanistan during the summer of 2011.  Considering the catastrophic events that will be occurring then, he has to.

So here we have it. By 2011 we're out of the Middle East, and by 2014 we'll have only God knows what. In the meantime, the primary function of health care reform will be to provide a lawful cover insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies to siphon the fast dwindling treasure of the middle class, on a more rapacious scale.

Consider this, General Motors, Starbucks and the US Post Office to name a few all have one thing in common at this very moment. Health-care costs are already the 800 pound gorilla on their profit or loss statements and now the beast will have a 3-year banquet laid out for it.   This can't happen you say!  That the government will not allow it!

Wakey wakey.  Are we actually to believe that the very same people who work for major corporations, then work for the government, then work again for the same corporations are going to ensure that this legislation is enacted in a compassionate, rational and humane manner? 

Whether or not you're in favor of medical marijuana, the only way you can imagine these elites as caring about main street America is pure stoner logic.  Or, in the words of Republican Leader John Boehner "hell no." 

Will the Republicans repeal this bill and replace it with something compassionate, rational, humane and affordable?  Again in the words of Republican Leader John Boehner "hell no."  Republicans would rather eat their own children than help people who would never vote for them in the first place.  Anyone remember Katrina?

Better yet, show me just one of the screaming Republican stooges who completely disrupted the health care town hall meetings last summer, who ever had to take bankruptcy as a result of a catastrophic illness?  Likewise, show me how many tea baggers who are delighted with their private insurance plan and wouldn't dream of having anything else.   

To sum it up, the Republicans are just as uncompassionate, as the Democrats are feckless. Or, is Jesse Ventura right?  That this two party charade is simply orchestrated for the benefit of the gullible masses?

If so, consider this. By 2011, when the troops are returning home from the Middle East, the country will likely be preoccupied with yet another crisis.  The gouging will be horrendous.  Medical costs and insurance premiums will skyrocket and even the largest companies will no longer be able to bear the burden.  Then, more of those who have, shall have not.  

We are not immune to this future and worse yet, many financial forecasters are warning us that the other shoe is about to drop.
