The Coming Paradigm Shift

Is the universal paradigm of conflict and quiescence a radically new philosophical outlook?  For Western Civilization, the answer is partly yes.  However, this paradigm has been known to man long before Western Civilization crawled out of the Dark Ages.  Or more to the point, it has been long known to men and women living in ancient indigenous cultures like the Hopi and Aborigines.

Regrettably, such ancient indigenous cultures have suffered the human-centric paradigms of Western Civilization, such as Manifest Destiny.

However, times have turned against Western Civilization, and it now faces the threat of a human-centric paradigm called a holy war.

Holy War

A war declared or fought for a religious or high moral purpose, as to extend or defend a religion.

When comparing Manifest Destiny and Holy War, the same philosophy of triumphantism applies wherein a people get the notion into their head that God (or their god) is on our (their) side, and that they can pretty much do whatever they want to anyone who is not like them.

Today, Americans are well aware of the abuses of the human-centric paradigm of Manifest Destiny and the suffering it caused.  Yet, there is no real difference between the Islamist doctrine of Holy War and Manifest Destiny but one.  Manifest Destiny is now regarded as a shameful relic of the 19th century, whereas Holy War is still as much a horrific reality of the 21st century as it was in the 19th century.

Western Civilization has, in spite of its notable failures, largely managed to move forward to the more enlightened view of the universal paradigm. Granted, it has been a process of taking two steps forward and one step back, but there has been a significant and measurable progress from one century to the next. 

Islam on the other hand is just beginning to struggle with these concepts, and while the mainstream is quiet, the fringes are filled with fear of the changes that will attend a paradigm shift in their thinking.

Simply put, the Islamists are terrified by the prospect of evolving away from their outdated and violent human-centric paradigms towards that of a truly compassionate and lasting universal paradigm.

Therefore, before we commit blood and treasure to our next world war, let us not mire ourselves with outdated human-centric paradigms.  Rather, let's leave that hopeless endeavor to those who violently cling to the failed paradigms of an unworkable past. In time, they too will become a part of a past they cherish more than the lives of their own children.

At the end of this unfolding tribulation, we must continue to strive to open our minds to the mutual inevitability of conflict and quiescence.  In doing so, we will develop the courage to prevent or minimize conflict while it is preventable as well as the spiritual strength it takes to nurture our beloved moments of quiescence without being lulled into a self-deluding bouts of normalcy. 

Conflict and quiescence are inevitable, and they apply to everything that is in the universe, including man.  However, as long as we continue to think in human-centric paradigms that perceive the universe as happening to us, it will, and history will repeat itself.  Or in other words, when we see ourselves happening in the universe as opposed to it happening to us, all things become possible.

In this, there is true cause for hope that our coming tribulation will sow the seeds of a more enlightened race.  In the dark days ahead, this is the hope to which we must forever cling.
