Watching the Patterns Emerge

The problem with significant questions is that they can be just as fragile as our shortsightedness.  Consequently, as the old saying goes, “we cannot see the forest for the trees.”   But let’s frame this idea in terms of modern science and how knowledge is stored and gathered from the Internet.

Let’s assume that your next-door neighbor has just purchased a computerized telescope, and he wants to show off for you benefit. 

So there you are sitting on the back porch on what is undoubtedly a clear and lovely night for observing the heavens.  

Your neighbor says, “Let’s look at the rings of Saturn.  I’ll just punch in the codes for Saturn and the telescope will do the rest.”  With great flourish, he punches in the numbers and the telescope obediently correlates its relationship with the heavens above and the motors in the base whir it around until it comes to stop – right on Saturn.   

Your neighbor gestures to the telescope and proudly says, “You may have the first look.”   

To humor him you gaze through the eyepiece and say, “All I see is the chimney on Fred’s house.” 

Now your neighbor pushes you aside and looks for himself and then goes into a rampage. “What a piece of junk,” he exclaims. “I’m getting my money back!” 

Your neighbor is one of those by-the-book types and so you decided to quietly retreat to the serenity of your own home, rather than to tell him that the telescope worked perfectly.  It knew where it was in terms of time and space, and likewise where Saturn was in terms of time and space. However, it was not programmed to look around Fred’s chimney.  It only connected two points in time and space based solely on the need to form that relationship.

The Internet works no differently than the automated telescope.  Define the need and it will connect the points. 

When significant questions are applied to the non-linear data of the Internet the same reasoning applies.  You must see the connecting points between your significant question and the answer – and nothing else in between the two. 

Otherwise, you will become frustrated and resume a more satisfying and familiar form of investigation by refocusing your attention on the antics of dolphins as the frolic before the bow wave.

Be a Plato!  Go Forth and Seek Without Bias

What this all boils down to is not doing something new.  It is about unlearning how society has taught us to seek knowledge. 

Modern society teaches us to look at the dolphins by approaching our needs with bias and fixed goals. 

Plato on the other hand would define his needs and then cast those needs upon the cyberspace of the Internet as a way toward the “the Idea” and then watch the patterns form without bias and fixed goals.

A great danger faces the Earth and, before its bow wave, the dolphins of man’s institutions and governments weave through our lives in a most distracting way.   

We must have the clarity of a Plato if we are to ignore them, so that we may define the bow wave of our destiny.  Only in this way can those of us in the mainstream, the little people who must pay for the antics of governmental and institutional dolphins, hope to perceive the impending bow wave of catastrophe before others decide that we are ready to know. 

Go forth and seek, and in the spirit of the philosophers, share what you’ve learned freely with like-minded Netizens.
