Regaining Control: Individual or State Again
The way in which the Army/National Guard chose to bring the outbreak under control in the movie ‘Outbreak' was just one of many possible ways to
do so. An aerosol bomb is a rigorous, effective, yet indiscriminate way to take control. Simply put, everybody within its reach dies. The core theme of
the movie was that the decision had been made too early, since a cure was found just in time.
Of course, any government should wait as long as possible before using draconian measures like mass killing of people to contain an epidemic. However, if all else fails what other courses of action are available?
A nuclear assault, although brutal, can be considered a solution. It would kill everything that lives, sterilizing (but also severely contaminating) in the
deployment area. It should be considered only in the gravest of cases because the "cure" would certainly be worse than the disease, itself.
Another extreme would be death camps, similar to concentration camps, where sick people gather to die or to be humanely put to death.
Lethal injection would be one method used there depending upon the availability of the chemicals. If the chemicals are not available, the administrators of the camps will have to use whatever they have at their
disposal.
The thought that we may yet see those camps again is deeply chilling, but this time, the function of the camps would be to ensure the survival of
mankind and to relieve the agony of those suffering from painful terminal disease.
Obliterating a city to prevent a country or even a continent from being slaughtered by an epidemic is, at best, a devastating, though potentially necessary, choice to have to make.
Gathering the sick and killing them by the
masses, ‘culling' as it became known in the recent Foot-and-Mouth breakouts throughout Europe, is most certainly not a popular measure to take.
It is estimated that 1 in every 10 animals killed to prevent the spread of this disease was actually infected.
In Britain alone more than a million animals were put to death this way, leading to storms of protest. What if those animals had been people?
Assisted Death — The Last Bastion of Personal Liberty
Is the matter of our own mortality so fearsome that we are grateful for the opportunity to relinquish this vital aspect of our own personal liberties to
nation states and special interests? Do we as individuals really know best, or do "they" really know best?
Do nation states really know best, when it comes to assisted death? In the last 100 years, more people have died from State sponsored ethnic cleansing than all the combatants who fell in all the
wars combined.
Do physicians really know best, when it comes to assisted death? In general, yes, but not the special interests they serve and to
those whom they've given their allegiances. All too frequently, life is prolonged against the expressed desires of the terminally ill because
physicians must accommodate the nation states and the special interests they serve such as hospitals and drug companies.
Do religious leaders really know best, when it comes to assisted death? That depends on whether or not they are the religious leaders of your own chosen faith, and even within a religious
faith, there can be a morality dissonance such as that experienced by honest Catholics who choose to practice birth control against the dictates of the Vatican.
In the final analysis, it is one faith-based segment of society using their numbers and political leverage to impose their own beliefs on others.
If you are a dissenter in the controlling majority or the controlled minority, there is no difference between this form of control and any other.
An old truism states, "We die as we lived."
If we lived as weak individuals who sacrifice our personal liberties to a nation state or special interest, then we must be ready to die in the manner they prescribe.
Another truism tells us, "The greatest blessing is to die in your sleep."
We know some of us will not be that fortunate. Nevertheless, if we live as individuals who value and protect our own personal liberties, then we, and
we alone will be free to choose the manner of our own death — regardless of whom it annoys.
